IRAM SUMMER SCHOOL 2007 FAQs
When is
the application deadline? July 30th 2007
Is
there a conference fee? Yes, the fee is 150 € and it includes the
social events (excursion, conference dinner, coffee breaks) and the transport
between Granada and Sierra Nevada and the telescope. It should be paid at
the conference in cash or checque.
- When
will I be notified? Normally, before August 15th. But if you need an earlier
answer (e.g. in order to obtain visa or financiation), send an email to summerschool2007(at)iram(dot)es
clearly stating so.
Who is
invited to apply for the summer school? Active astronomers, PhD students
who have little or no experience in mm-observing, especially from the Herschel
network.
Is there
an age limit? No
Who should
not apply? Experts in mm-astronomy, persons not active in astronomy.
What can
I do in order to increase my chances to be accepted for the school? Give
as much information as possible about your research interests and whether
mm-observations would be a future option for you. Up to one member of each
groups participating in the FP6 Program "The
Molecular Universe" can be proposed by that group.
Can I get
funding? We will have no general external funding. Therefore IRAM can,
in general, not give grants for travel and lodging. In exceptional cases,
the conference fee can be waived. Participants from the Herschel FP6 network
"The
Molecular Universe" can get funding from that net.
How should
I arrange my flights? You should arrive in Granada at the latest Sept. 28th,
19:00, or in Malaga airport at the latest till 17:30. A shuttle bus will pick
up people at Malaga and Granada airport, and at our Granada office and bring
them to the hotel. On Oct. 5. the bus will bring participants to Granada (13:00)
and to Malaga airport (15:00). Granada has mainly domestic flights from/to Madrid
and Barcelona, but also connections with Ryanair to London (Monarch, Ryanair),
Nottingham, Liverpool , Milano-Bergamo . and Frankfurt-Hahn. Information

Are there buses
or trains?
Buses to Granada are less expensive than trains. The one way bus fare from Madrid
to Granada is 12 Euro. There are buses between Madrid and Granada about every
hour. There is a night bus leaving Madrid at 01:30 arriving in Granada at 6:30.

What about health
insurance? IRAM
has no health insurance for visitors. Either you should have a travel insurance
or, if you are in a European social security system, bring the necessary international
documents or cards.
Which clothes
do you recommend? Pradollano is at 2000m altitude, the telescope at 2900m;
October is a transition period between Summer and Fall, so on your travel from
Granada to the mountain you could expect any weather conditions from summer
conditions to rain, and even an occasional snow shower, and temperatures between
0 C and 30 C. We also recommend to bring sun glasses, sun lotion and solid shoes
if you plan to have a walk. The hotel has a swimming pool visitors are allowed
to use.
Do I have
to organize my hotel/meals? No, all participants will stay at the hotel
Kenia in Pradollano. Full board and lodging is 72.80 Euros per night in a
single room, and 56.20 Euros/night/person in a shared double room.
Can
I stay longer? Yes, you can stay extra days in Sierra Nevada or Granada.
We can help you with hotel arrangements.
Should
I bring my laptop? It is not necessary, but if you bring it you can install
the IRAM data reduction software (Windows, Mac, Linux/Unix). We will set up
a WIFI connection.
