IRAM SUMMER SCHOOL 2007 FAQs

When is the application deadline? July 30th 2007

Is there a conference fee? Yes, the fee is 150 € and it includes the social events (excursion, conference dinner, coffee breaks) and the transport between Granada and Sierra Nevada and the telescope. It should be paid at the conference in cash or checque.

When will I be notified? Normally, before August 15th. But if you need an earlier answer (e.g. in order to obtain visa or financiation), send an email to summerschool2007(at)iram(dot)es clearly stating so.

Who is invited to apply for the summer school? Active astronomers, PhD students who have little or no experience in mm-observing, especially from the Herschel network.

Is there an age limit? No

Who should not apply? Experts in mm-astronomy, persons not active in astronomy.

What can I do in order to increase my chances to be accepted for the school? Give as much information as possible about your research interests and whether mm-observations would be a future option for you. Up to one member of each groups participating in the FP6 Program "The Molecular Universe" can be proposed by that group.

Can I get funding? We will have no general external funding. Therefore IRAM can, in general, not give grants for travel and lodging. In exceptional cases, the conference fee can be waived. Participants from the Herschel FP6 network "The Molecular Universe" can get funding from that net.

How should I arrange my flights? You should arrive in Granada at the latest Sept. 28th, 19:00, or in Malaga airport at the latest till 17:30. A shuttle bus will pick up people at Malaga and Granada airport, and at our Granada office and bring them to the hotel. On Oct. 5. the bus will bring participants to Granada (13:00) and to Malaga airport (15:00). Granada has mainly domestic flights from/to Madrid and Barcelona, but also connections with Ryanair to London (Monarch, Ryanair), Nottingham, Liverpool , Milano-Bergamo . and Frankfurt-Hahn. Information can be found on http://www.turgranada.es.

Are there buses or trains? Buses to Granada are less expensive than trains. The one way bus fare from Madrid to Granada is 12 Euro. There are buses between Madrid and Granada about every hour. There is a night bus leaving Madrid at 01:30 arriving in Granada at 6:30. Information can be found on http://www.turgranada.es.

What about health insurance? IRAM has no health insurance for visitors. Either you should have a travel insurance or, if you are in a European social security system, bring the necessary international documents or cards.

Which clothes do you recommend? Pradollano is at 2000m altitude, the telescope at 2900m; October is a transition period between Summer and Fall, so on your travel from Granada to the mountain you could expect any weather conditions from summer conditions to rain, and even an occasional snow shower, and temperatures between 0 C and 30 C. We also recommend to bring sun glasses, sun lotion and solid shoes if you plan to have a walk. The hotel has a swimming pool visitors are allowed to use.

Do I have to organize my hotel/meals? No, all participants will stay at the hotel Kenia in Pradollano. Full board and lodging is 72.80 Euros per night in a single room, and 56.20 Euros/night/person in a shared double room.

Can I stay longer? Yes, you can stay extra days in Sierra Nevada or Granada. We can help you with hotel arrangements.

Should I bring my laptop? It is not necessary, but if you bring it you can install the IRAM data reduction software (Windows, Mac, Linux/Unix). We will set up a WIFI connection.
